Discovery of Distinct Behavior in Crabs of Iranian Coasts: Use of Third Leg Instead of Cheliped in Competition

Our studies on the native crab Leptochryseus kuwaitense, which inhabits the mud flats of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, have revealed a unique behavior. Unlike other crabs that use their cheliped for fighting and competing for habitat and mates, this species has been observed for the first time to utilize its third leg in these competitions. This new discovery sheds light on the behavioral ecology of brachyuran crabs and may pave the way for future research.
